2006 Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
is accepting applications for the awards which recognize outstanding environmental performance, programs and
projects in the state. Winners will be invited to an awards ceremony and press event in the fall at Drumthwacket,
the governor's official residence in Princeton. The deadline for application submittal is September 22, 2006.
In addition to the NJ-DEP,  the award program is sponsored by the NJ Corporation for Advanced Technology

Dynamics of New Jersey Geology Explore the Coastal Plain at two sites: observe Katrina impact on beach
and dune, and dig for fossils in greensand marls. Collect specimens that record the break-up of Pangaea in the
Piedmont Province. Learn about temperature and pressure conditions that created metamorphic rocks in the
Highlands.  Investigate paleoenvironments and the weathering of the Ridge and Valley Province. Daily sessions
will be led by NJ Geological Survey scientists, the Curator of the NJ State Museum, and a Coastal Geomorphologist.

Mine Reclamation/Mine Drainage Conference The 8th Annual Statewide AMD and AMR Conference
will be held  at the Atherton Hotel in State College, PA. This year’s theme is “Back to Basics.” The Conference
is being coordinated by the Western and Eastern Pennsylvania Coalitions for Abandoned Mine Reclamation.
The program will feature presentations on passive mine drainage treatment systems, evaluating water-
monitoring results, identification of funding sources for projects and much more. Watershed groups, public
agencies, consultants, local and state officials will all be in attendance to network and share their craft.

2nd Annual Tour de Pines
In celebration of Pinelands Month in October, Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA) and Dan Rappoport, a bicycle touring enthusiast and longtime volunteer with PPA, have again joined forces for 5 consecutive single-day (loop) bicycle tours of the New Jersey Pinelands. The goal is twofold: to highlight the natural and historic features of the 1 million acres of the Pinelands, and to encourage NJ residents to get out and explore this unique environment. Bicycle enthusiasts and Pinelands enthusiasts are invited to participate!  The Tour de Pines will begin on Wednesday, September 27 at PPA's Bishop Farmstead in Southampton Township, traverse the length and breadth of the Pinelands National Reserve, and culminate at the Pinelands Discovery Festival at Whitesbog Village on Sunday, October 1. Each day’s loop tour will range from approximately 40-70 miles per day. Note: The Tour de Pines is a voluntary, non-competitive, unsupported ride. Participants are required to provide their own transportation, food and lodging. Participants may elect to ride 1, 2, 3, 4 or all 5 days of the Tour. The Tour will stop at various locations to highlight the natural, cultural and historic treasures of the Pinelands, including the following:

Regional Planning Comes of Age
A conference exploring the promise & practice of regional land use planning
in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states, on the 25th anniversary of the Pinelands Comprehensive Management Plan.
Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, NJ. Registrations will commence May 1, 2006. The conference will include plenary addresses on the big picture of regional land use planning aimed at preserving natural and historic resources while strengthening communities in our dynamic and growing part of the country. Seminars
will address topics such as transfer of development rights, growth management tools, protecting water resources through regional planning, economic impacts of regional planning, using regional planning to preserve historic and cultural resources, cooperative planning across political boundaries, and regional zoning and land use regulation. Seminars will also explore outstanding and developing examples of regional planning, such as the New Jersey Pinelands, the Adirondacks Park, the Long Island Pine Barrens, the Cape Cod Commission, Chesapeake Bay watershed initiatives and much more. First Annual Chesapeake Watershed Forum
U.S. Fish and Wildlife National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV. "Restoring the Bay requires new approaches, creative thinking and innovative implementation strategies to get the job done," said David Bancroft, President of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. “An annual Watershed Forum will help accomplish that.” The forum will feature seven tracks over three days, including forty one sessions, three computer labs, eight facilitated discussions, two field trips and multiple networking opportunities.
The event is designed to provide an opportunity for watershed groups and local governments across the region to
